Tessellation of Culture

The artefact symbolizes the importance of community within a successful social experiment. The colour represents the three crucial elements to the Boathouse 4, in Portsmouth Dockyard; Green being the symbol for land; Blue the symbol of the sea; Black the final symbol of history. Each strand becomes the individuals inhabiting the project, tessellating together to create a strong unbreakable structure, the community. The various cultures and beliefs are shown as unique patterns framed within each form.

Representing the concept of a host and intervention, with the main structure being utilized in an engaging manner, as Fred Scott states “The host building needs to be understood intrinsically and in terms of it setting, and to be looked at in terms of actualities and provenance”, the artefact describes the relation of the host’s interior and exterior as a balancing contrast in experience.
